Verizon Update 8/31/01
A. Tauzin/Dingell Bill
Recap: As many of are aware from previous updates, this bill poses a serious threat to telecommunications industry by allowing the bells to offer long distance, voice and data services without first having to open up their exclusive networks to competition. For an overview of this measure, you can go here: http://www.war.iglou.com/ Current: The most recent developments point to the possibility of a compromise with this bill. Few politicians see the measure in it's current form going any further, and this has therefore opened up discussions to change the bill into an acceptable piece of legislation. It has been very slowly moving through the political process and will hopefully be completely thrown out when The House makes it's final decision. B. Class Action Suits Recap: There were initially three class actions that were filed with the potential of realizing damages for the public. Although the appellate court's decision to throw out one of the class action suits has made the legal battle more challenging, the lawyers at the forefront of the war are refusing to give in. One of the actions was re-filed only recently and the third suit will likely do the same. If the suits are worded differently enough to survive the first round of court, then Verizon will be facing an uphill battle. Verizonpathetic received this update on 8/28/01 directly from the attorney handling the case: Not surprisingly, the lawyers for Verizon are asking that the re-filed complaints be thrown out once again. The judge looking at the amended complaint did not throw out the case the first time, however, since the appellate court overturned his decision, he may give this further consideration. Hopefully he will make another decision that is consistent with his first one. C. E-mail Options
As we mentioned in the last update, Verizon
has seen fit to control "spam" by forcing users to always send their
e-mail using one of the various Verizon suffixes (verizon.net,
bellatlantic.net, gte.net). More than likely this is simply a
measure to provide further marketing for their monopoly.
Fortunately there are always those who can
seem to find a way to outsmart the opposition. There has been a
recent launch of a mail service called "thinmail". Thinmail provides
people with the ability to change their "FROM" address while the email is
en route. A bit of a mail forwarding service. Go to www.thinmail.com if not having the
Verizon-from address is important to you.
D. David over Goliath
Verizonpathetic recently received a letter
chronicling the further poor treatment of a particular couple. What
made this letter notable was the fight and the outcome. Recommended
reading for anyone who feels that beating Verizon is impossible.
Part one can be found here:
and part two here:
D. Yet Another Site
www.voicesforchoices.com is
another website worth visiting. This is a coalition that is
fighting against all the bells and their continued strangle hold on
consumers. Information is frequently updated and there are tools to
quickly and easily contact the politicians who are there to help
you.
E. Making Your Representatives Work for
You
During this process, any contact with state
reps, senators, congressmen, etc. via phone, e-mail, letters, etc. will
help tremendously. Please remember that their job is to represent
the people and their views. Thus far, the concerted effort from
individuals has made a tremendous difference in preventing Verizon and
other bell companies from completely running out of control.
Although some major battles have been won, to let up on the pressure
now would be extremely harmful.
Therefore, please continue to let your state
representatives know that you have concerns and that these concerns need
to be addressed.
